Goner Records hosted a 7″ release party for Ex-Cult’s “MPD”, the first single off their debut album scheduled to drop on November 13.  San Francisco’s Sic Alps played a low-key set following a performance by Ex-Cult that showed the band is primed and ready for their US Tour opening for Ty Segall beginning in January 2013, which has a Memphis stop on January 27 at the Hi Tone.   In addition to the “MPD” single, the band had copies of their new self-titled album on CD available for purchase in advance of the vinyl release, and holy hell is it amazing.  The album opens with the the hard-hitting “Knives on Both Sides” and keeps intensifying as it goes, dialing back the sneer here and there on surprisingly catchy, poppy tracks such as “Better Life through Chemistry” and “Young Trash,” and going out strong on the sprawling yet claustrophobic “Future Victims.”  There’s not a single skip-worthy song on the thing.
